  • Curriculum Maps | Sudell Primary

Curriculum Maps Home / Curriculum / Curriculum Maps / Introduction At Sudell Primary School our curriculum approach is underpinned by three key drivers that inform everything we do and all of our planning. These three drivers help us to fulfil our aim of offering our wonderful children a truly world class education. Our three curriculum drivers are designed to ensure that we offer a broad and balanced curriculum that is rich in: Knowledge Experience Social Conscience Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum. Our pupils are offered a very wide range of experiences to extend their understanding of themselves and the world in which they live. Skills, attitudes and values are developed to prepare the children for the next stage of learning (Key Stage 1 and 2 ready and secondary ready), and enable them to be successful in the community. We believe that effective learning takes place when there is considerable emphasis on active involvement, opportunities to talk both imaginatively, expressively and to explain and clarify thinking. The school expects everyone to develop and show a sense of responsibility and self-discipline whether alone, together, at work or at play, and to support policies on equal opportunities. We actively promote British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs to prepare our pupils for life in modern day Britain. We also provide opportunities for our pupils to learn about the contribution of Britons to innovation, excellence and changes in the world. At Sudell Primary School we believe that through clear, discrete subject specific teaching we can develop a clear knowledge rich curriculum that will benefit our learners, a majority of whom are from ‘disadvantaged’ families. Through combining this with our aims of making our curriculum rich in experience and social conscience we believe that we can fulfill our curriculum aims/ ‘big intent’. Our children deserve the very best; we believe our curriculum offers them this. Curriculum Flowchart Our curriculum flow charts map out the Sudell approach to delivering a curriculum embedded with experience, knowledge and social conscience. This approach is replicated for every subject within our curriculum. Click here to view the Curriculum Flowchart National Curriculum The National Curriculum guidance is always our starting point when planning our curriculum. This guidance from the Department of Education sets out clear aims and course content for each subject. We ensure we cover each aspect of this, then apply it to our own Curriculum approach. Click here to view the National Curriculum Curriculum Maps Throughout our curriculum we believe in a subject specific teaching approach. The exact units to be taught are identified on our subject curriculum maps. One curriculum map is a basic outline. The other is a more in-depth curriculum map with the National Curriculum objectives matched against each topic. Our curriculum maps ensure there is a clear progression of knowledge and skills underpinning the learning experiences of the children. Click here to view the Basic Curriculum Map Click here to view the National Curriculum Map Our Core Key Skills For each subject, we have identified a set of Core Key Skills. These are the skills which underpin the children’s learning across the curriculum and enable them to progress and deepen their learning each year. They show a clear progression in skills within each curriculum area and act as the building blocks for success. Click here to view our Core Key Skills Aims and High Dividend Concepts Our subject leader has not only identified the key aims for their subject, but also outlined what the High Dividend Concepts are for their subject. The High Dividend Concept map outlines exactly where these concepts will be taught and explored in further detail. KS1 & KS2 SATS Home / Parents / KS1 & KS2 SATS / Information for parents: 2023 National curriculum tests at the end of key stages 1 and 2 Key stage 1 tests – Year 2 pupils Your child’s teacher is responsible for judging the standards your child is working at in English, maths and science, by the end of key stage 1. To help inform those judgements, pupils sit national curriculum tests in English and maths, commonly called SATs. They may also sit an optional test in English grammar, punctuation and spelling. Subject Test Paper English Reading Short text and questions Long text with separate questions Mathematics Arithmetic Mathematical reasoning English grammar, punctuation and spelling (optional test) Spelling Punctuation and grammar (including vocabulary) Teachers will use the results from these tests, along with the work your child has done throughout the year, to help them reach their own judgements about how your child is progressing at the end of key stage 1. These teacher assessment judgements will be reported to you by the end of the summer term. Key stage 2 tests – Year 6 pupils If you have a child in year 6, at the end of key stage 2, they will take natio nal curriculum tests in English reading, English grammar, punctuation and spelling and mathematics. The tests help measure the progress pupils have made and identify if they need additional support in a certain area. The tests are also used to assess schools’ performance and to produce national performance data. The key stage 2 tests will be taken on set dates unless your child is absent, in which case they may be able to take them up to 5 school days afterwards. Subject Test Paper English grammar, punctuation and spelling Spelling Punctuation and grammar (including vocabulary) English reading English reading Mathematics Arithmetic Mathematical reasoning At the end of the summer term you should receive test results for: English grammar, punctuation and spelling English reading Mathematics Teacher assessment As there is no test for English writing, this will be reported as a teacher assessment judgement. This is a judgement teachers will make, based on your child’s work at the end of key stage 2. You will also receive teacher assessment judgements for English reading, Mathematics and Science. How can you help your child to prepare? Teachers will make sure all pupils in their class are prepared for the tests. There’s nothing specifically test-related that you should do to prepare your child. You should follow the general advice teachers give about supporting your child’s education throughout the year. What do the tests look like? You can look at past papers by clicking here or searching online at www.gov.uk/STA Further information Your child’s teacher will be able to answer any questions you may have about the tests and teacher assessment judgements. For more details you can visit www.gov.uk/STA or watch our short videos for parents about the tests at key stage 1 and key stage 2.

Governors Home / About Us / Governors / As a member of the Aldridge Education family of schools our Local Governing Committee is part of the overall governance structure of the multi-academy trust. You can see details of the Trust's governance here. Details of the Trust's policies that the school and our Local Governing Committee follow can be found here. As a member of the Aldridge Education family of schools, our Local Governing Committee is part of the overall governance structure of the multi-academy trust. Please see the Aldridge Education website for further information on Governing Policies and Accountability. Governors Register of Interest and Attendance Chair of Governors - Phil Holden Mr Holden can be contacted by email using chair@sudell.blackburn.sch.uk I was brought up and educated in Darwen – firstly at Lower Chapel Primary School and then at Darwen Technical School – both of which are now converted into houses and apartments! After leaving school in 1971 I joined the Army for three years before leaving to take a degree in Managerial Sciences at the University of Bradford. After graduation, and getting my first civilian job, I joined the Territorial Army and was subsequently commissioned into the Parachute Regiment. My work kept me away from Darwen but after 18 years away I returned and have spent the last 32 years living here. I have two children, both now living and working in the South, and three grandchildren who are of Primary School age. My career, following graduation, was varied and encompassed international marketing, teaching (I taught Corporate Finance to Masters level at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada and at Leeds University in the UK), international consultancy, large-contract negotiation, commercial management, and merger and acquisition management. All of these ultimately at senior management or Board levels. I am now retired and I wanted to take the role of Chair of Governors because I love Darwen, because 60+ years ago I was a primary school child living just off Sudell Road and have taken the life-journey the children at Sudell are starting, and because I have the time to support the efforts of our school’s amazing staff. Vice Chair - Emmelia Taylor I joined the governing body in December 2017. Living and raising children in Darwen, as well as a career history in teaching, I have a genuine interest in the education system within the community and ensuring the next generation have the best opportunities we can offer. I currently manage a training company which specialises in childcare and education, working with numerous councils in the North West to build the skills and expertise of the practitioners working in the sector. Since gaining my degree in Disability Studies (Inclusive Practice), my passion lies with inclusion and ensuring all children have equal opportunities and experiences in the education system. Governors - Georgina Boyer STAFF Governor - Jayne Hornby I am proud to be the staff governor at our fantastic school. It has been a privilege to work at Sudell since 2016, but I have worked in education for over 28 years. Throughout my career in education, I have been determined to ensure that all children have the best possible experiences. This is why I am a firm believer in the three key drivers of the Sudell curriculum, ensuring that our curriculum is rich in knowledge, experience and social conscience. In my role as staff governor, I am looking forward to using my experience to support the leadership team at Sudell in continuing to develop into an outstanding school. Trust Governor - Mubaaruk Ibrahim Mubaaruck Ibrahim joined the Trust as our first Chief Growth Officer in September 2021. Prior to joining Aldridge Mubaaruck was CEO of Feversham Education Trust and is a former Executive Principal at Star Academies. He was named Lancashire Headteacher of the Year in 2017 and was shortlisted for the TES Headteacher of the Year Award in the same year. He is a National Leader of Education who brings considerable experience and expertise to our school. TRUST GOVERNOR - Tracy Moynihan I am a qualified Finance professional, providing both financial and strategic support to the boards of the companies that I have worked for. I am currently supporting with the transformation of a Social Housing Association, and previously worked for a local Apprenticeship Provider which helped me to identify and focus on my ability to help and support young people in our community. I have a wide network of business contacts that I am looking forwards to introducing to Sudell to add further enrichment to the children's learning experiences. I spent several years as Beaver leader at Highfield in Darwen which was a fabulous experience supporting and teaching our young people in a more informal manner, but when the opportunity arose to offer my professional support to Sudell I felt that this was a better use of my knowledge and skillset. I became a Governor in Spring 2023, and am looking forward to seeing how I can help and support the team at Sudell in providing a safe and nurturing environment for our young people to grow and learn. PARENT GOVERNOR - Melody Fitzjohn I joined Darwen Aldridge Sudell Primary (DASP) as a Parent Governor in February 2022. I am currently employed by Darwen Aldridge Community Academy (DACA) and I have two children who attend both DASP and DACA. Prior to my employment with DACA, my specialist area was in Early Years and I worked within Nurseries and Pre-Schools for nine years. During my time in Early Years, I worked with children who had additional needs and SEN, children in care and children under external agencies. My role was to work alongside Primary Schools in the area to transition these children into mainstream school and to deliver workshops to the staff members involved with the children. I also delivered Intervention sessions within the setting which consisted of Speech and Language, Makaton, British Sign Language, Art and Creativity Therapy and working with EAL children to develop their English skills. I have been privileged to work alongside some amazing children and adults, some of whom I still see to this day. I hope this may continue with my work at DACA and DASP. Parent Governor - Georgie Clark I have been a parent governor for Darwen Aldridge Sudell Primary since February 2023 and I have one child who attends the school. I have a BA(Hons) Fashion and Costume degree, but I am currently studying for my Primary PGCE with QTS degree. Prior to this, I worked within early years and customer-centred job roles. Principal - Jenna Harty Jenna was appointed as Principal of Sudell Primary School in April 2023, joining from another Darwen Primary School, where she held the role of Deputy Headteacher and SENDCo for 13 years. Jenna is an experienced primary practitioner and senior leader, with a passion for Early Years. Jenna graduated from Lancaster University, gaining a BA (Hons) in Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status in 2006. Since then, Jenna has gone on to study a Post Graduate Certificate in Education gaining her SENDCo Award from Edgehill University in 2016. Jenna is delighted to be taking up her first post as a Principal and excited to lead Sudell on the next stage of their journey. Trust Governor - Rob Daniels I have worked for the Trust since June 2019 and I work across the 5 Northern Schools as Regional Estates Manager. I have responsibility for the all the school buildings, utilities, projects as well as Health and Safety. I am currently serving as a Parent Governor at my children's Primary School in Bury.
