Music Curriculum

Intent: Music is a unique and expressive way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a means of personal expression and can play an important part in personal development in children. Through music we can express, represent and communicate our ideas and perceptions. At Sudell we understand how important music is as both a creative yet highly academic subject and the part it plays in a child’s life. We intend to provide children with opportunities to listen to, compose and perform music. We also ensure that our pupils have access to highly trained music teachers and learn a range of instruments across their time at our school. Implementation: We teach music weekly. Each lesson is taught (with the exception of Year 4 and 5 who access Bolton Music Services Wider Opportunities Programme) using the Charanga scheme of work to deliver the curriculum. With a focus on the dimensions of music (pulse, pitch, dynamics, rhythm, texture and tempo) as well as listening to, improvising, singing and composing music, we plan to provide our children with a quality, enriched and engaging music education. Impact: Our Music Curriculum is of high quality, it is well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods: • A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes. • Having the opportunity to listen to music from a long range of genres from history to gain both inspiration and analytical skills. • Assessment through compositions and performances. • Ensemble work through weekly singing assemblies. • Pupil discussions about their learning. • Pupils working in mixed ability groups in order to develop leadership, responsibility and confidence.

The National Curriculum guidance is always our starting point when planning our curriculum. This guidance from the Department of Education sets out clear aims and course content for each subject. We ensure we cover each aspect of this, then apply it to our own Curriculum approach. For each subject, we have identified a set of Core Key Skills. These are the skills which underpin the children’s learning across the curriculum and enable them to progress and deepen their learning each year. They show a clear progression in skills within each curriculum area and act as the building blocks for success.
