Year 6
The children have made us extremely proud of their start to their final year at primary school. As you know Year 6 is a very important year but as well as lots of hard work we also want the children to enjoy this year and we have lots of fun and interesting activities planned. Already the children have had lots of enrichment activities which have include bikeability, Sublime Science workshop, a walk to the Heritage Centre and Forest School. They have also had visits in class from the local fire fighters and a mindset speaker who was very inspiring.
Curriculum
In English the children’s learning was based around the picture book ‘Rose Blanche’. The children thoroughly enjoyed this book and it inspired them to write excellent diary entries – they were very thought-provoking pieces of work. Lots of our Guided Reading was based around the story and to compliment this book we are reading ‘The Boy in Striped Pyjamas’ as our class novel. In Maths the children have been increasing their knowledge of the four operations and are mastering long division. Science learning was based around the topic of Light and the children enjoyed working out how a periscope works and making their own. Our History was learning about the census and to bring their learning to life we visited Darwen Heritage Centre where we tracked the life of a local resident in the late 1800’s. The children thoroughly enjoyed Art and their final masterpieces are displayed in the school’s entrance – they are stunning!
Homework Incentive Reminder
The children in Year 6 are working towards earning an end of term reward. Each time children complete their homework, they will earn a special ‘DidiDot’ sticker which is added to a chart in the classroom. If children earn all 20 stickers by the end of the Autumn term they will take part in a special reward day! Our weekly homework includes reading three times a week and we are very pleased that the children are reading regularly at home and getting their diaries signed – brilliant! In addition, weekly spelling practice and Maths and Grammar are also sent home each Friday. We also set an additional writing challenge for Year 6 for over half term – write Mrs Harty and I a letter! We can’t wait to read them once we receive them through the post!
