Welcome to Reception!

Our Reception class is a calm, nurturing environment where young learners embark on their exciting school journey. In Reception, we focus on helping each child develop a love for learning, exploring and growing together. We are dedicated to providing a supportive space where children feel safe, valued and inspired to try new things every day.

Our Approach

In Reception, we encourage children to learn through play, creativity and hands- on activities that stimulate curiosity and build foundational skills. Our child- centred approach promotes:

• Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Developing empathy, independence and collaboration through group activities and friendship building.

• Communication and Language: Expanding vocabulary, listening skills, and confidence in expressing ideas.

• Literacy and Maths: Introducing phonics, reading, counting and pattern recognition in engaging and playful ways.

• Physical Development: Enhancing fine motor and gross motor skills through outdoor play, art and movement activities.

• Understanding the World: Exploring nature, science and cultural awareness to foster a sense of wonder and connection with the world.

PE Day: Tuesday

We have PE every Wednesday, where children develop coordination, balance and teamwork through fun and active games. Please remember to send your child to school in their PE kit on this day.

Homework

In Reception, each child is given a reading book. This needs to be read 3 times a week to improve comprehension and fluency. Books are changed on a Monday and given back by Tuesday.

Children are also given phonics homework, this is to be returned the following week.

The children that read their books 3 times and complete their phonics homework will receive stickers on the classroom chart. If children receive 20 stickers by the end of the term, they are invited to take part in a special reward day!
